Hilary Kenna is the Prinicipal Investigator of SeeSearch Project & Lecturer in Design & Digital Media at IADT: Dun Laoghaire Institute of Art, Design and Technology. She has worked with Touch Press as the designer of their latest iPad App, The Waste Land by T. S. Eliot, published jointly with Faber and Faber. The Waste Land launched in the UK and US and thus far is being extremely well received, making App of the week in the US. This is fantastic considering The Waste Land does not have the same mass appeal as other more general titles – after all Eliot’s poem, though a milestone in modernist poetry, is difficult for contemporary audiences and is loaded with academic references. The Waste Land iPad App, is a contemporary re-presentation of the poem as a true multimedia textual experience. Around the core poem text, there are carefully crafted layers of interactive media including: readings (by Alec Guinness, Eliot himself, Viggo Mortensen and others), a video performance by Fiona Shaw, critical perspectives (by Seamus Heaney, Craig Raine amongst others), detailed annotated notes, an overlay of the original manuscript and a gallery of related images. All of this additional material serves to enhance the readers’ engagement with the core text of the poem rather than distract from it. Together they build an expanded experience for the reader that helps them to understand the richly woven texture that is The Waste Land. Hilary Kenna will speak about Data Visualisation and new technologies, where creativity becomes reality and what that future reality might be.
Shane Gillen is a Sligo born magician currently based in Dublin. Shane’s magic has seen him invited into the New York homes of both Denzel Washington and Kelsey Grammer to perform for the stars, and whilst in New York Shane was also invited to perform a private party hosted by Samuel L.Jackson. Shane has performed backstage at a number of VIP and celebrity events such as backstage at Lady Gaga in The O2, backstage at The Meteor Ireland Music Awards, 50 Cent, Faithless, The Top Gear Festival and Electric Picnic.
Gillen spent the Summer touring Ireland with his stage show ‘The Arrow of Time – An Evening of Mind Magic‘, which culminated in a huge sold out show at The Hawk’s Well Theatre in Sligo to an audience of 340 people. According to popular music and entertainment magazine Hot Press Shane’s magic is ‘…not about the paranormal, the dangerous, the spectacular. It’s about the funny, the dexterous and the genuinely puzzling. There is no doubt that he is deceiving us all…‘ In June 2011, Shane was featured on the cover of The Dubliner magazine as well as having a 7 page spread inside.
‘The Arrow of Time…‘ purports to control the way an audience thinks and reacts to certain situations. It is this form of ‘mind-trickery’ that Gillen works best at, and so his talk ‘The Anatomy of Perception‘ at this year’s TEDx event will delve into ways he makes the audience think, various techniques to control an audience’s thought patterns and a bold insight into what you perceive to be happening, and what is truly happening.
